Dog Days with Karen LeFrak

In New York City you can expect to see composer and writer Karen LeFrak at two kinds of events: performance arts and animal causes. Best in Show, her new book about a girl who is learning how to ready her dog for competition, is scheduled for release this month, just in time for the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show at Madison Square Garden.

Tell us about your book.
I’ve been showing Standard Poodles for years. With this book I wanted to introduce children to the sport, which can also be a tool for teaching life lessons of taking responsibility, sportsmanship, and taking chances.

When it’s showtime, who takes the longest to get ready, the dogs or yourself?  Definitely the dogs!  They can take from six to eight hours.  I can be out the door in ten minutes, with my makeup done en route.

More friends

This past Tuesday night at the Corner Bookstore on 93rd and Madison, Gillian Miniter hosted a book-signing for Karen LeFrak who has just published her third children’s book, Best in Show (illustrated by Andrew Day). Karen, as all her friends in and out of the American Kennel Club know, is a breeder of champion of standard poodles.

The author is very well known in philanthropic and social circles here in New York, Southampton and Palm Beach. The wife of real estate executive Richard LeFrak, mother of two sons (Harrison and James).

Aside from her roles in the community, Karen is a modern Renaissance woman. She is also an accomplished concert pianist and composer. Her two previous books lightly provide a clue to that fact: Jake the Philharmonic Dog and Jake the Ballet Dog. All of her interests are linked by her naturally intense approach to her responsibilities and her creative interests.

All proceeds from the sale of the book will go to the AKC’s Canine Health Foundation and Take the Lead.

From Palm Beach Daily News, February 12, 2011:

Dog book

Palm Beach winter resident and champion standard poodle owner Karen LeFrak knows timing is everything. Her new children’s book, Best In Show, has been published just in time for Monday’s start of the Westminster Dog Show.

Best in Show tells the story of Abby, who loves the fluffy white poodles her Aunt Nancy helps breed, and she’s thrilled when she’s put in charge of one of the puppies, named Gem. Abby helps to train and groom Gem, and Gem helps Abby learn how to be a first-class handler. Then together, they enter the big dog show.

LeFrak knows from dog shows. She breeds and shows champion poodles, and her Mikimoto on Fifth, better known as Miki, was a two-time winner of the Non-Sporting Group at Westminster. The white fluffball — and we’re talking about Miki, here — earned 88 Best in Show titles and was America’s No. 1 Standard Poodle for three consecutive years.

LeFrak will donate her proceeds from the sales of Best in Show to the American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation and Take the Lead.

'Best in Show' Book Teaches Children About Taking Chances

Her love for music led her to write Jake the Philharmonic Dog, and her love for dance inspired her to write Jake the Ballet Dog, but Karen LeFrak has another major passion in her life, and she needed to give it equal billing.

The author, philanthropist and classical pianist is also a show mother to a line of champion standard poodles. Her latest work is Best in Show, a children's book about a little girl who learns how to raise champion show dogs — and how to become a great handler to her charges.

Best In Show: The new kids' book by Karen Lefrak goes to the (champion) dogs.

In a city of canophiles, it’s a difficult task to claim the title of Greatest Lover of Poodles. But if anyone can, it’s Karen LeFrak. So when the winning dog breeder set out to write her third children’s book, Best In Show (Walker & Co.; $16.99), she made the most of her vast knowledge of the fluffy creatures. “They say it’s best to write about things you know,” she says. “I’ve been breeding and showing dogs for about 20 years, so I thought, Gee, what a great thing to teach children about—sportsmanship, camaraderie, competition… and standard poodles.”

We hear . . .

That author/journalist and Upper West Side resident Carl Bernstein was spotted checking out two penthouse rentals at 55 Thompson in SoHo. Both are in the $18,000 to $20,000 price range . . . That authors Denise LeFrak Calicchio and Roberta Amon will come out with “Rooftop Gardens” in April. The book, published by Rizzoli, promises to showcase some of the city’s most fabulous outdoor spaces. Meanwhile, Denise’s sister-in-law, Karen LeFrak (wife of Richard LeFrak, who runs the family’s massive real estate firm), is coming out with another children’s book, “Best in Show,” which stems from her personal love of poodles. Congrats to the LeFrak ladies.

The archaeologist Iris Love and I used to throw the party of each Westminster Dog Show year at Tavern on the Green. (Iris’ dachshunds are still the greatest of the breed.) But this year, we both cede the place of honor to Karen LeFrak and Ellen Charles who are kicking off the canine excitement celebrating at Doubles on February 10th. Ellen, who shows poodles and bichon frises, is up from Washington. She and Karen are co-owners of a champion standard white poodle who everybody wants to get their hands on Judges, handlers, owners, breeders, officials will grace this exciting party, hoping for a peek at Karen’s new book Best in Show, an adorable primer for children who want to enter the dog show world. Spending the Kitty on Pooches

The lower level of the Hotel Pennsylvania was being transformed into a spa on Thursday afternoon, and a representative was all too happy to provide a tour. There were the treadmills of varying sizes for different body types; the bubble bath Jacuzzi with optional candles and music; the masseuse, the psychic, and...separate bathrooms for each gender?

"I consider these dogs our dogs," said self-described doggie concierge Jerry Grymek. In other words: Nothing is too good for the hotel's canine guests, he said, hence the profusion of red fire hydrants for the boys and the demure potted plant and covered seating for the girls. "So it looks like a powder room," Mr. Grymek said.

Best Showings

Last night at the new Ralph Lauren store on Madison Avenue and 72nd Street, there was a book signing for Karen LeFrak and her second children’s book, Best In Show. Illustrated by Andrew Day, the book is a pre-school to Grade 2 story of Gem, a Standard Poodle puppy who was born to be a champion. It’s a beautiful way to introduce children to fulfilling pleasures of owning a pet. You might call it a biography of a dog Karen knows very well. Gem was there last night, relaxing on an ottoman on the other side of the desk from where his mistress was signing copies of her book. All of the proceeds from the book sales are donated to charity.
